The STAR method is the gold standard for answering behavioral interview questions.
What Is STAR?
- Situation — Set the scene
- Task — Describe your responsibility
- Action — Explain what you did
- Result — Share the outcome (with numbers!)
Example Question
"Tell me about a time you had to meet a tight deadline."
Bad Answer
"I always work well under pressure. I just buckle down and get it done."
STAR Answer
Situation: "In my previous role, our biggest client moved their product launch up by 3 weeks."
Task: "As the project lead, I needed to deliver the marketing campaign on the new timeline without compromising quality."
Action: "I restructured the project plan, delegated tasks based on team strengths, and set up daily 15-minute standups. I also negotiated with the client to prioritize the 5 most critical deliverables."
Result: "We delivered all priority assets 2 days early, and the campaign generated 40% more leads than projected. The client renewed their contract for 2 more years."
